“We can make this work, Jess,” she said, a hint of desperation in her voice. “Don’t give up on us.”

“I have to go,” he said. “I’ll talk to you soon.” “Jess—” He hung up and just stood inside the phone booth, crying, as the snow began to patter against the glass walls.

* * * Hands tucked into his pockets, Jesseth walked through the snow back to Baelyn’s house, the flakes swirling on the amber glow of the street lights and sticking in his hair. He didn’t care. Even without a jacket, he wasn’t cold. Only heat bothered him. It made him hurt, made him hungry. Even just passing through Baelyn’s heated shelter gave him a headache, but there was no outside door to his cinder block refuge.

He couldn’t stop thinking about what Merinea had said. At first, it had seemed so absurd, but the more he thought about it...Baelyn was the only person who gained from him being a vampire. She had a live-in employee and companion now. Even during the day, she would lie outside his door and they would talk until he fell asleep. She paid for his clothes, his books, his blood. She built him a place to stay—Which was so damning, he couldn’t believe he hadn’t thought of this possibility before. The windowless, refrigerated room was ready and waiting for him. How could she have known unless she was responsible?

She was waiting for him, curled up in the sand in front of the main door, preening her scales and flaking off the old or damaged layers. He stopped before the big pane of glass and regarded her for a moment.

“Have a nice chat?” she asked, her disdain evident. “More or less,” Jesseth said. “I realized that I can’t ever go back to them. It may be years before I’m safe to be around and it isn’t fair to make her wait for me, and I don’t think I could bear to watch them grow old and die. A parent should never outlive their children.”

“Glad you finally came to your senses,” Baelyn said. “I told you a family is nothing but pain.” “Did you...Did you arrange for this to be done to me?” he asked after a moment. “Did you pay someone to turn me into a vampire?”

“No,” the dragoness said, but Jesseth’s relief was short-lived. “I didn’t have to pay them; they owed me a favor.”

“You? You did this to me? Why? You’ve ruined my life!”

She snorted, electricity dancing across her eyes as he stared at him through the glass. “What a predictably human response. Your species is so short sighted. Comes with being short-lived, I suppose. I didn’t ruin your life, I saved it. You are immortal, thanks to me— immune to age and disease and free of that lifesucking burden you call a family. Now, I think you owe me an apology and a little gratitude.”

Jesseth absolutely could not believe his ears. He just stood and stared at her, trying to make it make sense.
